Why must a ship have an Inventory of Hazardous Material?

IHM is a comprehensive list of all hazardous materials on ships. Compliance to International regulations like HKC and EU SRR requires IHM to be prepared and maintained. Enhanced safety for the crew and reduced legal liability for ship owners are the key l legal and moral requirements.

  • IHM protects human health and the environment throughout the ship’s lifecycle, especially during scrapping.
    1. IHM is a must for all ships ≥500 GT flying the flag of a party to the Hong Kong Convention or European Union (EU)
    2. All ships from Non-EUnations calling at EU ports(under EU SRR).
  • The ships must carry a Statement of Compliance (SoC) or Inventory Certificate Issued by a recognized organization or flag state authority after verifying the Inventory Of Hazardous Materials.
  • Port State Control (PSC) can verify the IHM and certification.
  • Missing or invalid IHM may result in detention or denial of entry into ports (especially in EU).
